As a manager, have you taken stock recently of how many things you are responsible for?
Here’s my thoughts – do reply with yours…
- Team training
- Team cohesion
- Team troubleshooting
- Team growth
- Budgets
- Projects
- Meeting deadlines
- Managing line manager’s expectations
- Implementing change
- Implementing company policies, procedures and ethics
- Devise innovative ideas to enhance the business
- Hiring, development, disciplinaries and dismissals
- Avoiding Employment Tribunals
- Maintaining brand reputation
- Ensuring workplace psychological safety
- Effective communication with team, peers, senior management
- Lead by example
- Emotional intelligence as your key DNA
Then of course, there’s your responsibilities outside work
- Maintain your earning power for your family’s financial security
- Switch off from work and be ‘present’ at home (not always easy if your mind is on the above!)
- Be fun and reliable even though it’s the end of the week and you’re exhausted!
- Be everyone’s rock, listen to and fix their worries.
- Always be positive and reassure everyone all will be well – even if you have a sinking feeling inside.
- Always reply ‘yes, I’m fine thanks’ when asked how you are – why burden them?
- Try not to spend all of Sunday thinking about the week ahead
People avoid putting themselves first because it involves a chunk of time which they can’t fit into their schedules. Most of us were brough up not to put ourselves first because that is selfish.
This is categorically Bu**sh*t. We have one mind. Train it properly and we will be lean, mean, thinking machines in all areas of our life.
We give respect to our physical health whilst ignoring our mind health. Newsflash – your brain is the powerhouse of your body – but you mind is the powerhouse of your brain.
An excellent starting point in any workplace at all levels of personnel is the global I-Act accredited courses for Managing and Promoting Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing and the Practitioner level.
