Let’s talk Change as managers

Change, it’s going to happen. Are you going to control it, or is it going to control you?

Over the years, I’ve worked with diverse managers, supervisors and team leaders from a wide range of industries – corporate, SME, charities, public sector, higher education, manufacturing – to name just a few.

A running thread throughout each collaboration has been the pressures each are under and the amplification when change has to be managed.

Add to the mix of general responsibilities managers have, many put themselves last on their priority list without even realising it.

From what I see there are three core areas of responsibility for anyone responsible for a team:

Workplace – ensure team training, development and inclusion – for both neurotypical and neurodivergent staff – implement all organisational directives, maintain/increase productivity, ensure policy, procedures and company ethos is adhered to, deal with team relationship issues, disciplinaries – avoid ETs, budget control/reduction, continued focussed on innovative service/product delivery – generally all simultaneously!

Home – juggle relationships and commitments for partners, children, dependent relatives, maintain financial earning power, community commitments – clubs, groups etc

Self – usually at the bottom of the list! Build in non-negotiable self-care to deal with all of the above including, breaks, nutrition, hydration, fitness and fun, analyse where you are – is it where you want to be? What’s your pathway to getting there? What needs to change? Do you really do any of these?

Managers can take some pressure of themselves by ensuring their teams have some basic tools to help them manage change better.
