Back in 1948 the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) was formed. In 1992 WFMH introduced the first of its themed annual World Mental Health Days on 10 October. This year’s theme is..
…”It is time to prioritise mental health in the workplace”
Is your workplace ready?
Will it shine?
Are you planning a one-day event, or kick starting a legacy of transformation?
Having worked in workplace resilience, cohesion, wellbeing, connection and inclusion for over two decades, 10 October can signal, an opportunity to kickstart a programme of training which delivers life-long knowledge in these critical areas to all staff thereby making their workplaces mentally well, thriving, productive and the place staff want to be rather than dread.
So how do you know you are buying the right training? Training isn’t a product. You can’t see it.
You can buy ‘off the peg’ programmes or you could collaborate with an expert in this area to deliver something bespoke to you.
Buying a programme with ‘First Aider’ in the title will tick a box. It will give staff some tools to use.
Question is, how are those staff looking after themselves?
Do they know how to shut down a conversation that is negatively impacting them whilst validating and reassuring the person sharing emotional pain to go straight to signposting?
Do they have the empathy to approach someone, start and manage a conversation to help them identify the support they want?
Do they know how to process the negative emotions they’ve listened to once the conversation is over?
Without foundation sessions on effective communication, empathy, emotional intelligence, unconscious bias, assumptions etc, any mental health training will not be as effective as it should be.
Giving training and then showing how to implement it is key. Otherwise, it just becomes a ‘box ticking’ exercise – doesn’t it? It’s hard for transformation and stronger, healthier teams and workplaces to grow with tick box exercises.
So, this #WMHD2024 – will your organisation transform or box tick?
I’m Jane. I collaborate with employers to transform their workplaces into thriving, productive spaces that live and breathe World Mental Health Day – every day.
Time to talk?
