Training – love it, or hate it?….

….I love it!

I love nothing better than hearing the transformation people I work with gain from training with me.

I was asked by a national employer to devise an unconscious bias programme for a team based throughout all parts of the UK. It was key to ensure the following was delivered along with tools for putting the training into action:

  • What is Unconscious Bias, also known as Implicit Bias
  • Where does it come from
  • How does the brain work when confronted with new people or experiences
  • How we can be hurt and how we can hurt others unintentionally and the damage done
  • Types of unconscious/implicit bias
  • Steps to train the brain
  • How critical thinking plays a part in reducing the risk of unconscious bias
  • Exploring how to be better

Today was week 2 and comprised a review of the ‘homework’ set!

There were some amazing feedback experiences from the delegates. The homework set was to use the steps explored to start a conversation with someone you didn’t know that well, ignoring any pre judgements or thoughts you had about that person.

  • One healed a rift with a family member
  • Another connected his wife with their neighbour – each thought the other didn’t like each other
  • Someone was teamed up with a person who was always introvert, would never speak – now they have started making eye contact and talking more
  • Putting thoughts to one side, one person made a point to get to know their neighbour better. By asking curious questions, both learnt a lot about each other.
  • Following the first session, one manager made a point of overcoming their fears of speaking with a new member of their team whose English language is not that good. Using the steps we covered, they learnt so much from their new team member – how they long to bring their partner to the UK from a war-torn country. The connection between them now is so much stronger.

Hearing this feedback was enthusing and empowering for us all.

Then I set their homework for this week! I am so looking forward to what comes next!

What do you love about training? Either receiving it or devising and delivering it?
