No, this isn’t an advert for Nike but a technique I teach for overcoming our natural process of procrastination.
How often have you talked yourself out of doing something (procrastination)? Maybe it was getting up on time – instead you hit the snooze button several times! Maybe it was something more important – ‘I won’t go for that promotion, I won’t get it’
Why do we do it? Why do we talk ourselves out of doing what we need to do?
Understanding the science enables us to accept it will happen, activate the brain hack below and break the cycle.
Our mind’s job is to keep us safe. So it will amplify what it thinks is a risk. This amplification grows quickly until it becomes all consuming and we can’t make the simplest decision. It shuts down the prefrontal cortex of the mind which is where our impulse hub sits – our get up and do.
The brain hack:
We have a five second window to interrupt the amplification of risk process to control our mind and capture our impulse hub.
How it works:
- Set your alarm
- Immediately when the alarm is activated, count 5,4,3,2,1
- On 1 – just do it
Try it out. You will be amazed how much you can conquer of what you used to avoid.
