Employers…Recruit a better way…

We all know that growing our own fruit and veg is something special.  Nurturing it through all the stages from seed, seedling, shoot to full grown crop.  There’s something special about the effort to create something ourselves.  Of course, the taste is always far superior to shop brought.

I’m a firm believer people are the same as crops.  When they are invested in,  nurtured to their full potential and taught business skills from scratch, they learn quicker, better and deliver commitment for the opportunity received.

Growing Talent enables both the employer and unemployed potential new talent to grow and learn together.  Over a maximum 12 week period, invaluable lifelong skills are taught on the Orientation and Holistic weeks. A maximum of 10 weeks learning the vacant role in situ ensures a confident match.

Why pay recruitment fees?  Why recruit from a cv rather then actual knowledge on potential and attitude?

Growing Talent is free.  Why not give us a try?  The next programme commences in April.  Contact me for more details of your London based recruitment.

There’s a fine line……………..

In communication between perception and reality – what really happened vs what we think happened!

There’s an equally fine line between how we portray ourselves as assertive and how we come across as aggressive!

Two subtle yet core areas of communication that can break what was previously a strong relationship,

One employer, spoke with  a member of another organisation without following the protocol of going through me.  The employer felt they were assertive whereas they came across as aggressive to the other party!  Each has a different belief of what happened during that conversation.

The result is a breakdown in a relationship built over two years, a bad light portrayed on a programme which has seen over 70 people into employment and a lot of bridges to repair for me!

So, please remember for every action there is a reaction.  How you feel you may come across isn’t necessarily how you do.  Lastly, reflect back on the conversation.  Make sure you are in agreement on what was said.

The simple tips above will save a whole lot of work later!

Growing Talent 8 – New Beginnings for 19

Monday 8 February saw 19 strangers from all backgrounds walk into Holborn Bars – a management conference and training centre in London not knowing what to expect.  All a little nervous.  Some a little sceptical.

Friday 12 February saw 19 trusted friends walk out of the same building.  So what happened inbetween to deliver this growth in confidence, self-esteem and trust? – The Orientation Week of Growing Talent.

After multiple stages of selection, the Associates as they are known, undergo a week long series of workshops, tasks, challenges and presentations to build their confidence and give them the tools to succeed in the employer vacancy they have been selected for.

Lesley Davies 3 rs

During this week, Lesley above – Head of Health & Safety for PwC – delivered her interactive workshop on the 3Rs – Refresh, Rejuvinate & Renewal!  This gives information and top tips on staying healthy at work.  Knowledge on how many ingredients are in a Starbucks Blueberry Muffin (48!) to how many calories are in a specialty coffee.  Combined, you would consume half your daily advised calories consumption – scary right?  Lesley then gave some top tips on sleeping – did you know repeating the word ‘the’ over and over relaxes the brain so much you quickly fall asleep when before you couldn’t!

Ben circulating

Ben delivered his bespoke ‘Give Yourself The Edge Presentation’ focusing on personal image, body language and communication.  Ben is Head of Client Services at PwC and has a wealth of top tips from his international hospitality career to share.

Bens practicalJPG

Laughs soon started when Ben gave a verbal instruction whilst his visible demonstration was different.  Amazing how many were caught out copying what the eye saw rather than what the ear heard!

Ben’s blindfold test brought home how important body language is even when it can’t be seen – eg speaking over the telephone……

Blindfolds hav it

The Associates also had a confidential hour roundtable chat with Rehana, Jacq & Kieran – seen in the centre below – some Growing Talent Graduates who know exactly what they are going through.

Group Jacq Rehana and Kieran

Throughout the week, we worked on communication, conflict management, taking unexpected feedback – all the situations that can arise at work.  A theme throughout the week was to devise and deliver a Social Enterprise idea to a panel of judges comprising senior management from the employer companies.

l-r above, Josh, Krupita, Chris & Jamie delivered Spray Your Way a unique way to bring graffiti artists to the mainstream and art to the masses.

l-r Julie, Dan, Sadeeq & Joe presented Silver Care a way to bring the older and younger generations together and learn from each other.

Tina, Jack & Richard below presented Circle of Life and excellent IT idea where young people teach older people useful things like Skype.  In return the older people share live skills and mentoring for the young.

Helping Hands from (l-r) Rebecca, Rosa, Ruby & Nathan had two parts to their idea. The first as a homeless outreach facility whereby an adapted vehicle would park in hotsports for homeless people to get showered and clean clothes as well as signposting to support services if they wanted.  The second part was an annual fundraising event.  A community fair where the homeless would mix with the community enabling each to get to know the other.

Tom, Mick & Charlene comprised Hairline a unique idea to provide bespoke wigs to cancer suffers to ‘give them their life back for as long as they have it’.  The revenue stream would come from makeovers for family, friends and nursing staff.  They provide support to the patient- but who supports them?

The final presentation came from Chris below

IMG_4792

Unconditional Love came from his own personal experience and focussed on the need for specialist support for children/young people who lose someone close to them.  His idea included a website, app and 1-2-1 mentoring scheme.

The judges spent an agonising time trying to select one winning idea.  In the end Silver Care was selected.  Below l-r, Allen from PwC as Head Judge presented  the cash prize to Joe, Dan, Sadeeq & Julie who each received £10.

Winners Julie Sadeeq Dan and Joe

The judges then shared their career journey and joined the Associates for a buffet lunch.

The seated judges above l-r are Michelle – Portico, Chloe – Iron Mountain, Sharon – wsh, Shane – Invest In Buy To Let, Julie – Portico, Allen – Pwc, Michelle – BASE, Sharon – Harrow Green & Nigel – JobCentre Plus.  All were amazed not only in the growth of the Associates over the week but also their ability to devise an idea and present it confidently with no notes!

No wonder the Associates left as confident friends!  Watch this space and http://www.growing-talent.co.uk and @Growing_Talent for news on how they progress over the next 10 weeks……………

‘Accept every challenge – work out how you will deliver it later’ – Richard Branson

Wise words from Richard which struck a chord with me when I first heard them a few years back.  It’s the only way to develop ourselves and recognise our full potential – I believe!

A few weeks ago,  I was invited to devise and deliver a bespoke workshop for the national arm of an international FM company.  The account they had in mind for the trial of this project is unique.  Set in a remote location the staff are often living and working in what can appear to be a separate world!

The workforce from the local community are tight-knit often by marriage and personal relationships.  This can be a good and bad thing depending on how healthy those personal relationships translate into the workplace.  It can be difficult when your partner is your supervisor at work?  How do you ever get any ‘me time’ to recharge those batteries which make a great employee?

The client requested three separate workshops be devised.  One for senior managers focussing on building their Personal resilience and recognising when they may be at risk of pressure impacts. A second for managers looking at what mental health actually is and whether ‘wellness’ is a buzz word or a critical business tool, the final workshop is for Supervisors one how to start a conversation and when/how to signpost someone on to the experience people who can help.

I was given a basic course brief and then given a free reign to devise something.  Yesterday, I delivered the first to the Senior Manager group.  With 12 senior managers who had travelled far and wide to attend the workshop in London, the challenge was on.

We spoke about the different tools we can use to make us mindful of our resilience and then some solutions to deliver increase personal resilience.  The workshop ran on with enthused discussion and questions.  Future plans were put forward and the end response was incredibly positive.

It shocked me how well I did.  I accepted a challenge for an area I wasn’t wholly prepared for and delivered something very special which was well received.

Richard is absolutely right.  Never doubt you can do anything.  Focus, research, immerse yourself in the challenge and you will succeed.

Stay calm this Christmas – just breathe!

Isn’t it strange, the most effective tools in our life are the simplest and free.

Most of us get caught up in the commercialisation of Christmas.  We forget it’s about spending time with those we love and/or just noticing our surrounds –  being thankful for just being.

Unintentionally, we let the bombardment of commercials and subtle marketing infiltrate us without realising it’s happening.  Gradually, in the run-up to the ‘big day’, we start to let the pressure in.

Some of us set unrealistic goals of getting ‘over the top’ presents for our loved ones instead of just telling them we love them.  We hunt down items that are often disregarded quickly afterwards.  For some of us, the price paid for this goods will be high – usually assigned to a credit card taking months to pay off.

So, let’s just breathe.  Be mindful of ourselves and take back control.  My personal survival steps are:

1.    Ask myself would the person really love and appreciate the gift or discard it quickly?

2.     Honestly, can I afford it? Would I be willing to draw the cash out rather than use a debit/credit card – cards make us forget we’re spending our cash so be careful!

3.    Having armed myself with the answers to the above, I draw up a list of the gifts I need to buy with shops, locations and price.

4.    Before going out, I take 10 minutes to breathe consciously:

Breathe in slowly for the count of 3

Hold the breathe for the count of 3

Slowly release for the count of 3

Repeat these three breathing steps several times until I’m engulfed in a feeling of calmness.

With each breath, I concentrate on how my body is feeling.  Over time my mind wonders – which, with a day’s shopping ahead it invariably does wonder! – I re-focus bringing my mind back to how my body is feeling.

I am so relaxed and peaceful by the time I reach the shops, Christmas shopping becomes enjoyable – not a chore.

Why not try this?  Let me know how you feel.  Remember – no one can see what you are doing or hear you focussing on your body as you breathe.

A very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.

Information Session – GT8

This morning saw the information session for Growing Talent 8 presenting to senior managers from all districts of Job Centre Plus – London and the Home Counties.

Some had travelled for over two hours to attend!

The venue was right on top of Embankment in prestigious offices.  For the first time I travelled by boat – amazing!  Just spending a few minutes taking in the scenery really put me ‘in the moment’.   Everything I had on my mind just melted away.

Camilla, William and Mehmet, seen in the feature photo above, agreed to share their journey on Growing Talent.  Camilla is now working for Portico, William for Harrow Green and Mehmet for MiteTDM.

Jordan from Growing Talent 2 was part of the Welcome team today!

After setting the scene, criteria to take part and showing a presentation, Camilla, Mehmet and William took the floor…………. and stole the show!

Mehmet William Camilla

The managers were inspired as was a new employer sitting in the audience who already has ideas on spreading the word within his business networks.

Finally,  Anna from the London district team of JobCentre Plus took the floor to explain the process, troubleshooting tips etc

Anna 2

The two hours flew past.  The audience was buzzing and we left in the firm belief Growing Talent would be the best programme yet.  Watch this space…….

A word from those that know………………

This short film was made by Anita Montaldo part of Portico’s Welcome Team who has mentored many of the Growing Talent Associates.  She has a personal love of film and offered to make this for the recent graduation ceremony.  This was held 26 November and celebrated all Growing Talent Associates who graduates the scheme from programmes 3-7 inclusive.

Rehana, Jane, Jacq, Mehmet, Kieran, Michael & Alechenu are great ambassadors for the programme and Julie Reed of Portico explains the process from the employer’s side brillitantly.

To date 60 people – all ages and backgrounds have secured permanent roles on Growing Talent.

Let me know your thoughts on this…………………………

D Day for Growing Talent Associates!

It’s been a long wait for some.  Today is the 2nd graduation to recognise the commitment and fabulous talent of those Growing Talent Associates who have completed and started their careers.

Celebrating programmes 3 – which started in the summer last year – through to the 7th programme – which completed last week – means there will be some serious catching up to do!

Stairs at Latimer

From the 3rd Growing Talent we have Matt who had been homeless for a couple of years, encountered depression and despite having a HGV licence didn’t have the confidence to secure a job.  His confidence flourished on Growing Talent and he joined Harrow Green as an operations specialist – packing, portering, driving etc.  Now he has his own place and is the warehouse supervisor!  Matt has supported many people following him on the programme.  Also celebrating today are David and Kavita.  Both joined a professional services Firm.

cropped group

The 4th programme above features Michael, Kit, Selwyn, Daoud, Joshua, Mitchell, Maxine, Courtney and Jane all joining to celebrate today.  Going into a mixture of manual and office roles, the diversity covers all ages, ethnic backgrounds, education and social issues.  One of the great stories here is Jane.  A single parent to two children, Jane had held a number  a number of managerial roles and even been part owner in a business.  She came with an open mind and willingness to do anything.  The roles Baxter Storey were looking to offer Jane were Barista or Sales Assistant.  Her enthusiasm, support of the team, flexibility and adaptability saw her complete Growing Talent and secure a Supervisor position for a brand new site!

Team plus

From the 5th, we will be joined by Camilla, José, Shanika, Shennell, Alex, Reese, Reece, Jason and Alechenu.  Alechenu made history by being employed after just four weeks!  José had shown his determination before Growing Talent.  Arriving in the UK with little English after working in the hospitality sector in Madeira.  In the UK he worked in various hospitality roles improving his English by day and studying for his HR qualifications at night.  Growing Talent was his opportunity to get the job he had dreamed of.  He joined Harrow Green as HR Assistant Manager!  Fabulous achievements from all the guys………….

GT 6

From the 6th programme, Mali, Mehmet – already secured a bronze award from his company for outstanding service! – Leah, Marta, James, Joshua and Chelsea.  Chelsea has achieved amazing things.  She committed to Wilson James 100% throughout Growing Talent despite having to sort out her accommodation issues – a legacy of leaving care – and is now a strong team member.  Leah has got herself noticed by everyone (not intentionally) including Portico’s Chairman Edward Griffiths!  She has implemented her own processes on reception, taken part in various events including as a Magic Maker at the recent bonfire night in Chiswick, sang for the team and clients and basically never said ‘no’!

Making the magic

Lastly, programme 7 which only finished 20 November!

Orientation Group

Celebrating today are Ernst, Jacqueline, Jerome, Kearon, Leighon, Maria, Michael, RoseMarie & William!  All have achieved amazing things along the way.  William had a bad finish to a 15 year career as a carer.  He relished being in work again – even the 6am starts with Harrow Green!  RoseMarie had run a theatre for 20 years doing everything from the set design and building to bookkeeping.  However, three years ou of work and dented her confidence.  A passion for property saw her secure a role with Invest In Buy To Let – who already had Mali from the 6th programme.

It amazes me when organisations talk about the lack of diversity in their business.  I’ve never focussed on diversity.  I’ve always treated everyone with dignity and respect adjusting the support I give to meet their needs.  The result is diversity is delivered  because confidence and trust are built!

Since the beginning of Growing Talent, we have mentored, supported, nagged and encouraged 60 fabulous people into employment.

It’s the best feeling in the world knowing you have played a small part in someone’s growth.

Growing Talent 6

GT 6

We commenced on 13 August with onsite placements for nine people.  Joshua joined Mitie Total Document Management, Mehmet joined Mitie in the print design department, Marta joined Pertemps, Stephanie and Marli joined Property Research Co – a new employer to Growing Talent – Shay joined Portico at Canary Wharf and Leah joined them at Chiswick Park, James & Chelsea joined Wilson James – another new employer!

After a fun week on the orientation, they guys were largely split up across the employers and won’t see each other again until the holistic week commencing 17 August.

First week saw the first casualty – Stephanie didn’t work out but luckily secured a summer job as a Royal Palace assistant.

All the others are progressing well!

Just planned out their holistic week where we will cover the global Mental Health First Aid course, personal finance, nutrition on a budget, keeping fit without the gym as well as an art class and declutter your life – declutter your mind!  Should be an interesting, full on week.

It’s amazing how the guys support eachother despite different backgrounds/situations they are in.  Check out more about their progress at http://www.growing-talent.co.uk.
